Kada Prashad is a sacred offering served at all Gurdwaras with every Sikh worship service. Parshad is soft, smooth, and velvety which can be easily prepared at home using only 4 ingredients: wheat flour, ghee (clarified butter) or unsalted butter, water, and sugar and achieve the same taste as the Gurdwara Prashad.
You may also hear Prashad being referred to it as Halwa; however, it is important to understand that Prashad and Halwa may mean similar things, but Kada Parshad is served with no garnishing. You can certainly enjoy it as dessert at home by garnishing it with pistachios or almonds and that is called Halwa.
One-Pot Kada Prashad
Traditionally Kada Parshad is prepared by roasting the atta (wheat) in ghee or butter and then adding in the sugar syrup which is prepared separately but in order to keep things simple and to avoid washing up more dishes than I have to, I will be sharing my one-pot Kada Prashad recipe with you.
Kada Prashad Color
You may have googled this recipe before you stumbled upon my page and seen a million different images of Kada Prashad. Like all recipes, the color of this recipe is based on personal preference.
The darker the Kada Prashad, the longer the atta has been roasted in ghee. If you don’t like the dark color, you can simply reduce the roasting time. The key thing to remember when frying the atta is to make sure that your atta is no longer raw. I personally prefer a lighter color for my Kada Prashad.
Ghee or Butter in Kada Prashad?
The answer to this question is your personal preference. Over the last 20 years, I have prepared Prashad both with Ghee and butter and have enjoyed them equally. For the purpose of this recipe which was prepared during Covid19 times, I chose to prepare it with butter.
Tips for a Perfect Kada Prashad
- STIR, STIR, STIR!! This is a hands-on recipe and you cannot walk away from it. For a perfect taste, you are going to have to roll up your sleeves and roast the atta by continuously stirring it.
- Keep an eye on the color of the atta. This part requires a little bit of practice. You want to roast it enough so that the atta loses its rawness but it should not be burnt
- When adding water, you want to keep your distance from the pan and make sure your flame is on low-medium as the water will splutter when you add it to the mixture
- In Gurdwaras, Prashad is prepared only with atta, but if you like a coarser taste, you can add half a cup of semolina. So, instead of 1 cup of atta, you will use half a cup of atta and half a cup of semolina
- The ratio of all the ingredients is 1. That’s it-it’s that simple!!
