This delicious, velvety dish is a very popular dish in North India and is made from very few and simple ingredients. This dish consists of matar (peas) and paneer (cottage cheese) which are sauteed with onions and tomatoes and spiced with aromatic Indian spices. In India, this dish is often prepared in winters as peas are in season then, but it’s a staple in my house all year round. I have made this dish for the last 10 years and since we don’t have access to fresh peas all your around, I prefer to use frozen petite sweet peas for this recipe. There is no need to thaw them, they can go directly from the freezer to the pan. I try to make cottage cheese at home whenever I can, but sometimes for convenience, I will pick up a pack from our local grocery store. It freezes well and on days when I have a, “I don’t know what to make for dinner tonight” moment, I turn to Matar Paneer. For this recipe, I opted to make this dish in my stovetop pressure cooker, but you can also make it in any dutch oven pan or a skillet (you can feel free to look at my recommendations under “My Shop” link on this site)
- Heat the oil in the pressure cooker and add cumin seeds
- Once they start to splutter, add onions and cook them for 3-5 minutes till they are brown
- Add the ginger and garlic paste and cook for 1 minute
- Lower the flame and add all the masalas (hold the garam masala) and salt
- Add 1 tablespoon of water and allow the masalas to cook on low flame for 3 minutes
- Add tomato sauce and allow to cook till the masala leaves oil
- Add peas and cook for 1 minute
- Add water and mix well
- Add the paneer, close the lid and allow to cook for 2 whistles. If you are cooking this in a pan, allow to cook n low to medium flame for 7-10 minutes with the lid half-closed
- Add garam masala
- Garnish with cilantro and enjoy!
